In-Person Class in Abiqui煤 | Springtime Watercolor Sketching Inspired by O’Keeffe’s Garden

Enjoy an inspiring afternoon with a tour of Georgia O鈥橩eeffe鈥檚 garden, followed by an immersive experience in painting watercolor botanicals at the O鈥橩eeffe Welcome Center in Abiqui煤. Led by Santa Fe teaching artist Sudeshna Sengupta, this hands-on workshop will explore expressive watercolor, capturing the springtime hues of northern New Mexico. Through interactive painting demonstration, you will be guided through step-by-step instructions on watercolor brushwork, washes, glazes, and more, in combination with watercolor pencils.聽

All supplies are included. A tour of O’Keeffe’s garden is also included in the workshop. This class is suitable for adults and youth ages 12 and up. Participants are welcome to bring snacks and a water bottle鈥攖he Welcome Center has a filling station.

This class will meet at the O鈥橩eeffe Welcome Center, located at 21120 US-84, Abiqui煤, NM 87510. Registrants will be notified 24 hours in advance if the lesson is to be canceled.

About the Instructor:

Sudeshna Sengupta鈥檚 career as a teaching artist spans multiple decades, continents, and cultures that inform her pedagogy for decolonizing studio art. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in 1985 from Visva-Bharati University, founded by the first non-European Nobel Laureate (1913) and humanist poet Rabindranath Tagore.

After teaching art and design at the college level in New Delhi, Seattle, and California, she taught at New Mexico State University-Alamogordo, where she established its first intaglio printmaking studio in 1995. Besides the O鈥橩eeffe Museum, Sengupta teaches credit courses with the School of Art & Design of the Santa Fe Community College.

Her etchings and lithographs from the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi have been featured in a landmark exhibition on Women Printmakers of India at the NGMA-New Delhi in India. Her work is in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Association Mus茅e d鈥橝rt Contemporain, France; Kala Institute, Berkeley, and more.

Sengupta also conducts workshops, short courses, lectures, and community-based art events focusing on multicultural and intercultural experiences that emphasize human, cultural, and environmental connectedness through creativity.
